Pier S project

The Port of Long Beach held a scoping meeting for the Pier S project at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 at Long Beach City Hall, 333 W. Ocean Blvd., in downtown Long Beach.  Many members of the goods movement industry, including local business leaders, came out in support of the project.  The deadline for written comments was March 14.  Letters were submitted to the Port of Long Beach, attn: Dr. Robert Kanter, Managing Director of Environmental Management and Planning, 925 Harbor Plaza, Long Beach, CA, 90802.

Comments in support of the project were encouraged to be submitted by both residents and businesses alike.  This project will support jobs and the economy on a regional basis – so everyone was encouraged to participate.  Click here for a fact sheet on the project.  Following are a few points to consider:

  • Economic benefits of project:  The Pier S project will create 2,900 direct jobs and will support more than 25,000 jobs in the region.  The project will also create many construction industry jobs.
  • Environmental benefits of the project:  The Pier S project will decrease health impacts by lowering air emissions overall, will provide more on-dock rail which reduces highway truck traffic, and ships will be cold ironed.
